About Deepavali Festival
DEEPAVALI FESTIVAL

Deepavali means last day of the dark half of Aaso month. It is the last day of year of the Vikrama era. Diwali word is made by ‘Dipawali’. ‘Aavli’ means garland, garland of diyas, the diyas are burnt all round the house in the deep dark night of Aamavas.

Diwali is the festival of light. Diwali is last 360th day of the year according to Hindu calendar. This day is very important for the followers of Hindu and Jain religion. On this day the Lord Mahavir had died and the Lord Gautam had only got knowledge. This is also a belief of people that first time Diwali festival was celebrated on the enthronement occasion of Vikramaditaya emperor. The festival of Diwali is deed on sin, light on darkness and also the victory of God on evil spirit means Diwali.

Upanishad is the language of saints. Saints means Aashradashta and Aashradashta means the person who sees spiritual matter before which happen after centuries; in their voice we can see the light of God who comes on earth. There are contexts that there is also incarnate light of God in Chhandogya Upanishad. Shri Krishna also describes himself by these words in Bhagwadgita:

‘Either Sun or Moon or Fire can’t burnish it. There is big importance of ‘knowledge’ in religion culture of our country. Knowledge is the synonym of light.  ‘SATYAMEV JAYTE’, it is the motto of our nation. Diwali festival is the festival of victory of truth on untruth. This festival depicts the motto of our country in a very glorious way.

On the birth of the Lord Jesus, the east savant had come to Jesus through the star or the light of God. Jesus tells to everybody by himself that,
‘I am the light of the world.’ Jesus calls lamps to everybody. ‘You are lamps of the world. People fire the lamp and put on the lamp-stand then it gives the light to everybody in house. Like that way let the light of yours fall on others. Whereas after looking on your good work they praise of your father. ‘

Mr. Pravinbhai A. Kadiya is writing about Diwali meaning like this way:

‘The day of Diwali means the group day of various occasions. The Lord Pashu had taken out extracting the substance of Earth.  – The goddess Laxmiji came out from ocean.  – The death day of Lord Mahavir. – The Pandavas came back from forest.  – Shri Rama entered in Ayodhaya after getting victory on Lanka. – The Lord Krishna released people from trouble after killing devils Narkasur –Bhaumasur.  And like this way people got freedom from the troubles by devils then people expressed their happiness by firing lamps therefore this occasion known as Dipotsavi. In every time of age, this devil darkness comes again. ‘

Like this way, Kusum Bhupendra Dave done collection of the stories of Diwali:

First Story:

The Lord Rama had come back to Ayodhaya after the dwelling in forest of fourteen years in that continuation, the importance of Aaso Amavas is so much, because on that day, the enthronement had been done of Lord Rama. In the enthusiasm of enthronement, the garland of lamps had been lighted in whole over Ayodhaya. People had decorated Ayodhaya nation. In the expression of enthusiasm, people fired crackers. On account of many occasions, people celebrate Dipotsav because of happiness.

Second Story:

According to Vishnupuran, the Lord Vishnu has taken back three Bhuvan from the Baliraja and given back its own Bhuvan to Patalbhuvan Baliraja. In that happiness, people of Bhuvan have expressed their joy by lighting lamps. In the lights of lamps, entire Bhuvan was shined.

Third Story:

Third story, Shri Krishna killed Narkasur and before the death, Narkasur asked promise that the lights would be glittered in three Bhuvan on his death ceremony.

Fourth Story:

According to Markdey Puran, first time Narayan had done puja of the Goddess Laxmiji. Secondly Brahmaji, thirdly the Lord Shankar, fourthly the Lord Vishnu on the occasion of  churning ocean, fifth time Manu Maharaj, sixth time Nagas, seventh time man done Laxmi puja. There was huge night on that day so done brightness by lighting lamps.

Fifth Story:

According to Kal Puran, the Mahakali mata killed devils. The Lord Shiva calmed down the anger of Mahakali.

Sixth Story:

Daridra is the sister of Laxmiji. By her influence, poverty spread in whole society. That’s why on the Amavas of Kartak month, Laxmi and Daridra came in the place of death. The Goddess Laxmi could not see the poverty of people.  She filled the houses of people by wealth. Like this way people celebrated happiness and lighted lamps.

People do preparation from the beginning of Diwali. They do preparation of cleaning house to making sweetsfrom the starting. In the every occasion of Dipawali, the rangoli is colored in compound. Every people do brightness by lighting candle in night of Amavas. So every people like to do fire diyas in clay lamps. The potter put clay lamps from beginning. The farmers go at their farm and put ghee-diyas there.

In our religious book, lamp and fire is the sign of sun.

The writer Shri Parishit Rana is giving the idea of the beginning of lamps.

‘One time tired sun told with pride that, ‘can anybody do my work instead of me?’ after hearing that Gods looked each others face. Then one star came ahead after passing darkness. The idea of making diyas took birth on earth. The setting sun asked, ‘who will take up my work? The lamp told from the corner of earth from the silent world, ‘I will take position’ it’ll possible by me like God.’ Like this way small lamp started the work of the Lord Sun.’

‘The existence of man is swinging between darkness and brightness. Man celebrates Dip-Utsav in dark night of Amavas. Our ancestors decorated this noble conception behind Diwali purpose in to previous stories. Will the celebrations of Diwali and a ray of a hope of it would be alive in one’s heart by performing various rituals of Diwali? Shri Rama came back to Ayodhaya after getting victory on the devil king Ravana. People celebrated victory by lighting lamps. When the God’s worshipper runs behind golden deer and after falling in clutches of devil power, they suffers separation, grief, then God presents his power and he establishes in his bright nation after passing of darkness from the world of sleep. The Lord Vishnu passed of the Goddess Laxmi from the power of the devil king Bali; the worshippers of the Lord Vishnu celebrate Diwali in its remembrance and get kindness of the Goddess Laxmi. Religious austerity is also in the devil power. It gets influence on wealth on its authority. The wealth of world is the kindness of God, though the effect of the devil power comes in it and it becomes imprecation for man. That’s why like illusion, greed, jealousy and anger elements come to stay in the heart of man and man become incarnation of selfishness. So that it is necessary to save the Goddess Laxmi. Dip-Utsav is special remembering of eternal kindness.
